     Returns <parameter>string</parameter> with all alphabetic
     characters converted to lowercase.

     Note that 'alphabetic' is determined by the current locale. This
     means that in i.e. the default "C" locale, characters such as
     umlaut-A (&Auml;) will not be converted.
